Oral Cancer Screening

Oral Cancer Screening

The best thing you can do to beat oral cancer is getting checked regularly by a dentist. If it’s caught at an early stage, you’ll have about an 84% chance of survival, but those odds continue to go down the longer it’s left alone. Dr. Mierloi is trained in noticing the signs, so we can get you the treatment you need as soon as you need it!

What Happens During an Oral Cancer Screening?

When you turn to Dr. Mierloi for an oral cancer screening, she will examine your mouth for any abnormalities. This can include sores, lumps, or red and white patches. If she finds anything that could potentially be a sign of cancer, she’ll perform a biopsy to discover if it is or not.

What are Symptoms of Oral Cancer?

Like any disease, infection, or cancer, knowing the signs and symptoms can make a huge difference as you’ll know exactly who to turn to and how urgent the situation is. Some of the things you should look out for include:

  • Random bleeding
  • Pain in the ear or tongue
  • Lumps, sores, or patches in your mouth, throat, or lips
  • Jaw swelling
  • Difficulty moving your jaw
  • Difficulty chewing, speaking, or swallowing

What Can Cause Oral Cancer?

Did you know that men are twice as likely to develop oral cancer when compared to women? Your chances will also go up once you reach 40 years old. Some other factors that can increase one’s chances of developing the disease include:

  • HPV
  • Sun exposure
  • Tobacco and alcohol consumption
